Hive Placement: Thinking Like a Bee

Orient your hive entrance facing southeast or south — morning sun gets the foragers moving early. Provide afternoon shade in hot climates. Seasonal Management: A Year in the Hive

Fall: After the honey harvest, treat for Varroa mites — fall treatment with oxalic acid during the brood-free period is the most effective window of the year. Check that the colony has 60–80 pounds of honey stores to survive winter. Feed heavy 2:1 sugar syrup if stores are short.

Winter: A healthy, well-provisioned colony needs minimal intervention. Ensure ventilation to prevent moisture buildup (more deadly than cold), and resist the urge to open the hive on a cold day — it can be fatal to the colony.

The Big Three Pests: Varroa, Hive Beetles, and Wax Moths

Varroa destructor mites are the number one threat to managed honeybee colonies worldwide. Untreated, a Varroa infestation will collapse a colony within two to three years. Effective, organic-friendly treatments exist: oxalic acid (applied via vaporizer or dribble method), formic acid, and thymol-based treatments. Test mite levels at least twice a year.

The Honey Harvest: When and How

Harvest only capped honey — capped cells are sealed with white wax when the bees have reduced moisture content to a safe level. A frame is ready when at least 80% of cells are capped.

For your first harvest without an extractor, the crush-and-strain method is simple: remove capped frames, scrape the honeycomb into a food-grade bucket, crush thoroughly with a potato masher or clean hands, and pour through a fine mesh strainer into a second bucket.
